The castle, now in ruins, was the scene of a historical episode: in 1368, when the Castilians laid siege to the town, a lady from the village gathered all the flour left in the starving town to make bread. She throws them to the Castilians to make them believe that the besieged still have plenty of provisions. The Castilians, duped, lift the siege and leave the city. The church of Santa Maria dos Anjos dominates the south of the Praça Deu-la-Deu and houses the tomb of the local heroine. Nice coffered ceilings and walls covered with azulejos.
