ROMAN BRIDGE
Bridge built by Emperor Trajan, a preserved symbol of the Roman presence in Chaves.
Preserved symbol of the Roman presence in Chaves, this bridge would have been built by the emperor Trajan (hence its other name of ponte de Trajano) at the end of the 1st century, beginning of the 2nd century. It served as a passage on the Braga-Astorga road. The bridge, about 100 meters long, allows to cross the Tâmega river that crosses the city. Military markers of the time can still be seen on both sides of the bridge, which stands firm despite the sometimes violent floods during the fall. The Roman bridge is classified as a national monument since 1910.
