In 1958, a report of these teams was adopted by the Government of the Bahamas and Exuma Land and Sea Park became officially the first national park of its kind in the world. On April 30, 2002, the network was doubled in size with ten new sites designated as national parks, the total area jumped to over 700,000 hectares. Today there are 45 national parks and marine reserves!
