FORT FINCASTLE AND QUEEN STAIRCASES
A fort in the shape of a ship, with a modest water tower at the top, one of Nassau's defensive structures.
Built in 1793 by order of Governor Lord Dunmore, the ship's silhouette fort was part of Nassau's defensive constructions. At the top of the fort is the Water Tower, a modest water tower, and the 40-metre-high lighthouse overlooking Nassau. It is reached by the "Queen Staircase", whose 65 steps are believed to have been carved from a single block of stone by slaves who worked there for 16 years in the 1800s to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign.
