MORTON SALT COMPANY
American company north of Matthew Town exploiting salt from seawater to obtain food for flamingos.
This American company, which extracts salt from sea water, established itself here in 1934. Its facilities are located 3 km north of Matthew Town. It produces about 450 tons of salt per year, the second largest salt producer in North America. It has long been Inagua's main economic activity. A fine and rare example of the interaction of industry with its environment, salt mining provides food for flamingos, the evaporation of water causing the concentration of small crustaceans in the ponds.
