CANISY MOUNTAIN BATTERIES
The protected site of Mont-Canisy is home to many fragile plant species, which attract butterflies in particular.
Located between Deauville and Blonville-sur-Mer, the Mont-Canisy site was abandoned to walkers for half a century, before once again becoming an important historical and environmental site. It was, in turn, a seigneurial stronghold (broken up in 1793), an anti-submarine defense post during the First World War, a coastal battery from 1935 to 1940, and also the most important support point for the Atlantic Wall between Cherbourg and Le Havre between 1941 and 1944. Its position, facing the port of Le Havre and the Bay of Seine, led to its transformation into a concrete fortress during the last world war. The Amis du Mont-Canisy association, founded in 1993, organizes thematic guided tours (free of charge!) throughout the season. You can discover the remains of the casemates, bunker shelters and fire direction station, as well as the remains of an underground work of art (15 meters below ground), unique on the Normandy coast: 250 meters of tunnels, 25 barracks cells, 6 staircases providing access to the surface, 25 ammunition bunkers, and more. On the surface, enjoy an exceptional panorama of the sea and the Côte Fleurie. As for nature, the protected site of Mont-Canisy, overlooking the sea from a height of 110 metres, is home to many fragile plant species, particularly attractive to butterflies. Special "butterfly" night tours take place in summer. Finally, on a practical note, pedestrian access to the Mont-Canisy site is free, but unauthorized vehicles are prohibited.
