PEGASUS BRIDGE
A remarkable bridge at Bénouville, a site steeped in history, marked by the operations of June 5 and 6, 1944.
D-Day: June 5-6, 1944. Just imagine... The capture of the Eiffel-built swing bridge at Ranville and the lift bridge at Bénouville is the most famous and decisive mission of the British 6th Airborne Division. It was here that 180 soldiers from the Ox and Bucks regiment landed in gliders after midnight on June 5. Within ten minutes, the works were under control. The bridge, made famous by the film The Longest Day, was replaced in 1994 by a more suitable structure. The old bridge is preserved in the park of the Pegasus Memorial in Ranville.
