These cascades, with their 45-metre drop, are the most spectacular waterfalls in Chad. This natural barrier has given rise to a microdiversity of fish. Four species(Synodontis violaceus, Synodontis ocellifer, Labeo lereensis and Arius gigas) are found in Lakes Léré and Tréré, but not in Lake Chad. The Gauthiot Falls are named after an explorer who disappeared, probably drowned, and whose body was never found, but some now call them Zah Soo Falls.
