Krasnoyarsk is crossed by the Yenisei River and lies around 636 km east-northeast of Novosibirsk. Krasnoyarsk is an important stopover on the Trans-Siberian Railway, with a population of around 1,066,934 in 2016, making it the fifth-largest city in Siberia. The city covers an area of 172 km2 and is surrounded by wooded hills to the south and west, and plains to the north. Krasnoyarsk has a very continental climate, with cold, dry winters and short, hot summers. Snow covers the ground an average of 163 days a year. The city is also famous for its Krasnoyarsk Columns National Park, home to imposing vertical rock faces.
