Krasnoyarsk is crossed by the Yenisei River and lies around 636 km east-northeast of Novosibirsk. Krasnoyarsk is an important stopover on the Trans-Siberian Railway, with a population of around 1,066,934 in 2016, making it the fifth most populous city in Siberia. The city covers an area of 172 km2 and is surrounded by wooded hills to the south and west, with plains to the north. It is also famous for the Krasnoyarsk Columns National Park, famous for its imposing vertical rock faces. Krasnoyarsk's climate is very continental, with cold, dry winters and short, hot summers. Snow covers the ground an average of 163 days a year.
