WHITE HOUSE
After the Academy of Sciences, you can see a two storey house at the Empire style colonnade (th century), called the White House. Little remains of the grandeur of its interior at the time of its first owner, the rich trader Vtorov. In 1838, the house, which became public, served as a residence to the Governor General of Eastern Siberia. Several personalities were the hosts of this house, including the anarchist Mr. Bakounine or the geographer P. Kropotkine, etc. A commemorative plaque on the facade recalls the events of December 1917, when 153 red guards faced, nine days during, the attacks of the white guards. In 1918, the White House became the University of Irkutsk. Currently, it houses the scientific library with over 3 million books and one of the subsidiaries of Irkutsk State university.
