An autonomous port with basins, warehouses and container terminals, located in Strasbourg.
The construction of the autonomous port of Strasbourg was motivated by the opening of the Rhone-Rhine Canal in 1832 and the Marne-Rhine Canal twenty years later. At the beginning of the 20th century, the basins of Commerce and Industry were dug with direct links to the Rhine and Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. From 1926 onwards, the port facilities multiplied: docks, warehouses, container terminals. The infrastructures made it the leading freight zone in Alsace and above all the second French river port after Gennevilliers.
