MIKVÉ MEDIÉVAL
A surviving place and a privileged witness to history in Strasbourg.
A ritual bath in medieval Judaism, the Mikvé on rue des Charpentiers was rediscovered in 1984 during construction work, but is thought to have been built between 1200 and 1260. Present in Alsace since Antiquity, the Jews were expelled from Strasbourg during the pogrom of 1349 and saw their places of worship closed or destroyed. The place is therefore a real survivor and a privileged witness to history. A 500-litre pool of groundwater in a nine-square-metre cellar, descended by a spiral staircase, walls with niches for candles and a small room used as a checkroom: that's what you can discover today.
