CAGLIOSTRO'S HOUSE
This 1747 house is unusual in the number of windows on its three facades.
Giuseppe Balsamo was born in Palermo in 1743, and is better known by his patronymic Alessandro, Count of Cagliostro. He occupied the premises from 1780 to 1783, and intrigued in the affair of the Queen's necklace, compromising Cardinal de Rohan. This 1747 house is atypical, with numerous windows on all three facades. Also noteworthy are the first-floor balcony where the Italian adventurer's guests strutted their stuff, the rococo-style door topped by a handsome coat-of-arms pediment, and the Vierge au Lys nestling at the corner of Rue des Écrivains.
