Ignoring the thickness of the frozen layer of the ground, the industrialist Chergine, wanting to find water, undertook in 1827 to dig a well in the courtyard of his house. 10 years later, still not a drop of water; the ground was hard as stone. The specialists in St. Petersburg were aware of this and concluded that the permafrost was present. The laboratory, installed in the subsoil at a depth of 12 m (total depth 116.6 m), keeps a permanent temperature of -4 °C.
