ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM N. GRODEKOV
Founded in 1894, this must-see museum presents a fascinating exhibition on the regional flora and fauna and on the history of the country and its ethnic groups. In 2 hours of visit, you will become familiar with all the natural wonders of the Far East, its past and its first inhabitants. Don't forget to stop in front of the skeleton of the sea cow, a curious mammal that disappeared in the 18th century, and take a look at the Kamchatka crab, which has a wingspan of 1.50 m and weighs more than 7 kg. You can also see the famous Siberian tiger. The stuffed animals are staged in their natural environment. Some of the scenes are a little outdated, but in the end these museums are informative, visual and give a good idea of what you can expect to see in the region. One painting depicts Bogachev, a famous hunter who captured live tigers. His method? Very simple. You wrap a thick cloth around your wrist and arm and stick it into the mouth of the tiger, which will then suffocate and exhaust itself. That's when four or five of your friends throw themselves on the beast and catch it by the ears and legs ... This colossus Bogachev (of a size much larger than Peter the Great, it seems) has managed to capture 35 tigers using this method! Before leaving, do not forget the 2nd floor which is dedicated to ethnology and allows you to see traditional costumes and house interiors.
