The run-up to the Christmas festivities is brightening up the capital Tbilisi, which is decked out in its finest Christmas lights.
The capital Tbilisi lights up from mid-December in preparation for Christmas. Christmas markets also spring up all over the capital. December 25 is not a public holiday in Georgia, as Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January 7. December 31, however, remains an important celebration to usher in the New Year. Small businesses may be closed during the first weeks of January, but not in December, as the dates of celebration are different from those of the Catholic calendar.
