ST. GEORGE'S CATHEDRAL
This Armenian cathedral is the current administrative center of the Georgian diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Dominating Meidan, the Armenian Cathedral Surp-Kevork (St. George's) is the present administrative centre of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Built in 1251 by a wealthy Armenian merchant, the building was later 'confiscated' by the Persians in the 17th century and incorporated into the fortress. King Irakli II returned it to the Armenians in 1748 after the liberation of Tbilisi. In 1795, the Persians set fire to it. The tomb of the famous Armenian poet Sayat Nova is to the right of the church door. The last renovation was completed in 2012.
