KVEMO BETLEMI CHURCH
The Kvemo Betlemi church, set almost back against the mountain, has a certain timeless allure.
Leaning, or almost leaning, against the mountain, the Kvemo Betlemi (Bethlehem from below) church has a certain timeless allure. The building heralds the beginning of the hilltop neighborhood of Kldisoubani, also known as the Bethlehem district. Kvemo Betlemi was originally an Armenian monastery, Sourp Stépanos (St. Stephen), founded in the 18th century by Armenians emigrating from Persia. In 1988, the church came under Orthodox administration and was renamed "Bethlehem from below". Continuing uphill, you come to the church of Zemo Betlemi.
