MOGHNINI CHURCH
Sad remains of an Armenian church on the left before climbing up to the Bethlehem district.
Before the intersection of Rue Asatiani and Rue Akhospiréli, on the left before the ascent to the Bethlehem district, are the sad remains of an Armenian church, the Church of Moghnini. The name comes from the Armenian village of Moughni; according to legend, the skull of St. George was brought here and preserved. It was built in the 14th century, and the present building was erected in 1751 thanks to funding from the city's Armenian merchants. The church was badly damaged by the 2002 earthquake and has not been renovated since.
