OLD SYNAGOGUE
Tbilisi's great synagogue, with its superb Moorish architectural style, once occupied the center of the Armenian bazaar.
From Meidan Square, take the main street Kothe Afkhazi, then turn left. At the top of Saïat Nova Street, you can see the imposing silhouette of what was once the largest synagogue in Tbilisi. It occupied the centre of the Armenian bazaar. The synagogue was built at the beginning of the 20th century by worshippers from Akhaltsikhe. It has a superb Moorish architectural style. If you are in Tbilisi on a Sabbath or during Jewish religious holidays, be sure to visit the site to see a ceremony according to the Georgian-Hebrew rite.
