KARTLIS DEDA (MOTHER OF KARTLIE)
A 20-meter-high monument symbolizing Georgian hospitality and the tenacity of Kartlis Deda's defense against its enemies.
It towers proudly over Tbilisi. Kartlis Deda, "Mother Georgia", is 20 metres high and was erected in 1958 to celebrate the city's 1,500th anniversary! Her right hand holds a cup of wine. Her other hand brandishes a sword. The monument symbolizes Georgian hospitality and, paradoxically, the tenacity of its defense against its enemies. Neighbouring the Narikala fortress, it can be reached on foot. Stairs also lead up from Bethlehem Church.
