CHILDREN'S PALACE (NATIONAL PALACE)
This palace was the residence of the Russian viceroys of the Caucasus and one of the most distinguished buildings in imperial architecture.
After Georgia was annexed by Tsarist Russia in 1801, sumptuous monuments to the glory of the Russian Empire were built. Erected in 1858, the palace was the residence of the Russian viceroys of the Caucasus. In 1918, the government moved in and declared the advent of the new Republic of Georgia. The Soviet authorities then turned it into a children's palace, where celebrations were held (hence the full name: "National Youth Palace").
