MTATSMINDA MOUNTAIN AND PARK
Amusement park accessible from the Chonkadze Street funicular station at the top of the sacred mountain.
Mtatsminda rises to 770 m, and the climb offers a different perspective on Tbilisi. It's known as the "sacred mountain" or "Father David's Mamadaviti". Indeed, Saint David is said to have preached here in the 6th century.
There are two points of interest to explore: the amusement park at the top of the mountain and the district below. The charming streets are lined with old houses in "colonial" architecture. You'll discover faded pastel-colored mansions with beautiful facades, and palaces with superb architecture.
You can also follow your exploration with a funicular ascent (departure from the funicular on Chonkadze Street). First opened in 1905, the funicular is an attraction in itself, taking you to the Mtatsminda amusement park. The construction of this amusement park was commissioned by millionaire Badri Patarkatsishvili in 2007. On his death, the Tbilisi authorities completed the work. Try the Grand Route for its panoramic views. If this type of leisure activity leaves you cold, climb it anyway: the view of the Greater Caucasus mountain ranges, the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus and the city is exceptional. The Funicular restaurant is one of the best in Tbilisi. In summer, an expedition to the heights brings a little coolness. Paths lead down to the Narikala fortress, 2.5 km away. You'll pass the enormous residence of billionaire Ivani Ivanishvili, Prime Minister from 2012 to 2013. All in all, a wonderful walk.
