PLACE DE LA LIBERTÉ (FREEDOM SQUARE)
A square with several names and a statue of Saint George designed by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli.
In Georgian "Tavisouplebis Moedani". We're in the heart of Tbilisi. Built in the 19th century, this square took on several names: under Tsarist Russia, it was named Yerevan, then Lenin in Soviet times, and finally Freedom Square after Georgia's independence in 1991. The town hall ("Méria") is a superb building, constructed in 1882. The statue of St. George, designed by the sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, accused of being in the pay of Russian power, is disputed.
