Here you'll hear the heartbeat of the country. Stretching from Liberty Square to Kostava Street, it's the nerve center of the city. In the 19th century, designed to reflect Russian imperial prestige, the avenue was called Golgovine Prospect. It then took the name of a famous poet, Shota Rustaveli (1160-1220), the father of Georgian literature. This avenue is dotted with the superb Opera House, museums, the Parliament, restaurants and hotels. A favorite passageway for locals, it's also the scene of political demonstrations in front of Parliament.
