A strategic point controlling major economic routes, Gori has always been a militarized city. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of fortifications as early as 65 BC, contemporary with Pompey's expedition. The current structure dates from the 17th century. In the Middle Ages, Georgian kings made it one of the country's most impregnable strongholds. Once you've reached the fortress, which has been left in its original state, you can take in the beautiful view.
