STALINE PLACE
Statue of Stalin, a popular dictator, 6 m high and dominating the square since 1952.
The statue of Stalin was taken down in the middle of the night on June 25, 2010, out of sight. Standing 6 meters high, the statue had dominated the square since 1952. The figure of Stalin is still the subject of controversy. For some Georgians, the dictator is popular. So, to avoid their wrath, the government acted "discreetly" by cordoning off the perimeter. The town hall was built by German prisoners of war during the Second World War, and features a dome identical to that of the Bundestag in Berlin.
