DMANISSI NAKALAKARI
Archaeological site north of the village of Dmanissi, with ruins of the medieval town and a magnificent viewpoint.
In Georgian, Nakalakari means "ancient city". It is an archaeological site north of the village of Dmanissi Patara (Old Dmanissi). The ruins of the medieval town of Dmanissi, spread over 25 hectares, offer a magnificent view. The pretty 7th-century basilica of Sion, Dmanissi Sioni, stands at the foot of the ruins. An important feudal center from the early Middle Ages, the town became very prosperous from the 12th century onwards, thanks to its location on the frontier. The bones of the Dmanissi man (1.7 million years old) have been found here.
