PANTHÉON
Impressive cemetery on the delightful hill of Mtsvané Kvavila, featuring a Russian church and the remains of a monastery.
Continuing up Gaponov Street on the delightful Mtsvané Kvavila hill, you'll come to the Koutaïssi "pantheon". For 150 years, this cemetery has housed the graves of the most illustrious Koutaïssians. This impressive site of calm and serenity also contains a 19th-century Russian church and the remains of the monastery that once stood here. These include a small basilica dating from 1013, whose interior contains superb medieval frescoes, and a 16th-century tower. Next door, you'll find the Mtsvanekvavila church.
