The Ilia Chavchavadze Theatre is Batumi's opera house. It's the city's main performance venue, with a top-quality stage. Tickets are not expensive, and an evening there is highly recommended. The building dates from 1952 and was designed by Russian architect Teplitsky. The origins of theater in Batumi date back to 1879, when a play by Georgian Zurab Antonov was staged here. Opposite the theater is the Neptune Fountain, a replica of the one in Bologna, Italy.
