LAMARIA CHURCH
Church of the Virgin Lamaria, above the village, featuring a defensive tower with magnificent frescoes.
The church of the Virgin Lamaria seems simply impossible! Throning with its enclosure above the village, with the splendid Mount Shkhara in the background, it seems to have come out of a legend. This 9th century basilica, with a defensive tower, contains magnificent frescoes dating from the 10th-12th centuries, which time takes away little; that of Jesus is the best preserved. Inside, everything is lit by candlelight. It is the highlight of the architectural heritage of Svanetia. At sunset, the beauty of the place is all the more accentuated.
