CHAPEL OF THE HEROES OF VIDOVDAN
Serbian Orthodox chapel with crypt, one of Sarajevo's most controversial monuments.
Erected in 1939, this Serbian Orthodox chapel (Kapela Vidovdanskih Heroja/Капела Видовданских Хероја) is one of the most controversial monuments in Sarajevo. Its crypt houses the remains of the twelve members of the Young Bosnia organization who participated in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914, including those of the perpetrator, Gavrilo Prinicp, who died in custody in 1918 at the age of 23. Vidovdan is the Serbian national holiday that falls on June 28.
