MOSQUÉE ČEKREKČIJINA
Ottoman mosque with a 32 m-high minaret and dome, featuring an interior decorated with geometric and plant motifs.
Erected in 1526, this Ottoman mosque (Čekrekčijina Džamija) is one of the oldest in Sarajevo. Damaged during the last two wars and restored in 2007, it has a 32 m high minaret and a low dome of 10 m in diameter. It has the particularity of having stores adjoining its outer walls, without a harem (courtyard) separating the sacred space from that devoted to commerce. The rents paid by the merchants thus made it possible to finance its operation. The interior is decorated with geometrical and vegetal motifs.
