MOSQUÉE DE BAŠČARŠIJA
Ottoman mosque in the form of a cube with a dome and a three-domed porch featuring a 34.70 m-high minaret.
Founded in 1528, this Ottoman mosque (Baščaršijska Džamija) gives its name to the Baščaršija neighborhood. It was the center of the main sharia (religious and commercial complex) of the city: baš comes from the Turkish baş meaning "head" and čaršija is derived from the Persian chaharsu meaning a "crossroads". Originally built of wood, it was destroyed several times. Since the 18th century, it has been a cube (11.50 x 11.70 m) with a dome and a porch with three domes. The minaret is 34.70 m high.
