KOVAČI CEMETERY
Muslim hillside cemetery with 2,500 white graves of civilians and defenders killed during the 1992-1996 siege.
Located on a hillside, this Muslim cemetery (Šehidsko Mezarje Kovači) is bristling with 2,500 white headstones. These are the graves of some of the 11,500 civilians and defenders of Sarajevo killed during the 1992-1996 siege. In the center stands the dome housing the grave of the first president of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović (1925-2003), guarded by soldiers. Just to the north, on Ploča Street, the fortified Širokac Gate houses the Alija-Izetbegović Museum (2 KM). To the east, on Širokac Street, there is also the Museum of Heroes of the War of Liberation (free).
