MEDERSA KURŠUMLIJA
Large Koranic school, the country's oldest and last remaining madrassa, housing several buildings and a café.
This Koranic school (Kuršumlija Medersa) is part of the Gazi Hüsrev-Bey mosque complex. Founded in 1537, it is the oldest active medersa in the country. While some 400 students occupy modern buildings (far right), the elegant original medersa (center) houses the Gazi-Hüsrev-Bey Museum, dedicated to the vakuf (foundation) that manages the entire religious complex. To the right of the courtyard is the old tekké halveti. Dating from 1531, this former place of worship for Sufi dervishes is now used as a gallery for exhibitions and events.
