MARKET MARKALE
Covered municipal market target of two of the deadliest attacks during the siege of Sarajevo.
Established in 1895, this covered municipal market (Pijaca Markale) was the target of two of the most deadly attacks during the siege of Sarajevo. Bosnian Serb artillery killed 68 people here on February 5, 1994, and another 37 on August 28, 1995. This second massacre led to the intervention of NATO two days later. In the open part of the market, behind the building, you can see a glass monument bearing the names of the 105 victims and a mortar projectile still embedded in the ground between the stalls of the traders.
