Municipal museum tracing the history of the country's Jews and housing a rich collection of Ladino and Hebrew books.
This municipal museum (Muzej Jevreja BiH) is located in the old Sarajevo synagogue (Stara Sinagoga). It traces the history of the country's Jews and houses a rich collection of books in Ladino and Hebrew. Built in 1581, the building began as a hospice in the Sephardic neighborhood of El Cortijo and became a synagogue fifteen years later. It was rebuilt after the destructions of 1697 and 1942, and transformed into a museum in 1965. It is sometimes used for certain Jewish holidays.
