RIVIÈRE MILJACKA
A river of very low flow in summer and formidable in winter, it crosses Sarajevo from east to west before joining the Bosna at Ilidža.
The Miljacka (pronounced "miliaska") runs through Sarajevo from east to west before joining the Bosna at Ilidža. Stretching over 39.5 km in length, it originates in the southeast, in the Pale region. Despite its very low flow in summer (it reaches 10-20 cm in height) and its name which means "the adorable" or "the favorite", it is formidable in winter: since the 16th century, its floods have damaged each of the thirteen stone bridges of the city. But the Miljacka also provided Sarajevans with water during the 1992-1996 siege.
