Sniper Alley (or Snajperska Aleja) is the nickname given to the most deadly section of the main east-west axis of Sarajevo during the 1992-1996 siege. Depicted by Enki Bilal in Le Sommeil du monstre (1998), the site was feared by Sarajevans because of its proximity to the high towers of the Bosnian-Serb neighborhood of Grbavica (to the south), which offered an unobstructed view to the snipers of the Bosnian Serb army. The French peacekeepers had to develop a system of "shuttles" with their white-painted armored vehicles moving forward at a pace to serve as a shield for passers-by.
