ZANAT MUSEUM OF WOODCARVING
A small private museum featuring magnificent Bosnian furniture with fine carvings and marquetry from the late century.
This small private museum (Muzej Drvorezbarstva Zanat) was established in 2019, following the inscription of the "Konjic woodcarving tradition" as an intangible cultural heritage of Unesco in 2017. A classification that owes much to the Zanat cabinetmaking (Rukotvorine Zanat), which is also here the headquarters and main workshop since 1935. The museum displays beautiful Bosnian furniture, with fine carvings and inlays, made at the end of the 19th century by the founder of the company, Gano Nikšić, who had the honor of the international exhibitions in Brussels (1897), Vienna (1898) and Paris (1900). We also discover very contemporary creations of Adem Nikšić, who represents the fourth generation of cabinetmakers in the family: clean lines and light woods (oak, walnut, ash, maple) that are reminiscent of Scandinavian furniture, but with, here and there, some typical Konjic touches, such as marquetry and floral motifs. Since the 2010s, foreign designers have been collaborating with Zanat. For example, elegant branded lounge chairs have been welcoming visitors to the Nordic Museum in Stockholm since 2016. Zanat tables, chairs, cabinets, lamps and sofas can also be found in beautiful boutiques around the world and for sale online. In short, business is good for the Nikšić family, and the museum does not push for purchases at all. But if you feel like it, the workshop-boutique is right next door.
