LAC DE RAMA
Artificial lake, 7.5 km long and 4.6 km wide, created in 1968-1969 to build the Rama hydroelectric dam.
Located at 600 m of altitude, this artificial lake of 15 km2 is, in spring, one of the most beautiful places of the country. It offers then enchanting landscapes: green islets, fragmented shores, two peninsulas, including the Šćit peninsula on which stands the Franciscan monastery of Rama-Šćit, and high mountains in the background, especially Mount Čvrsnica (2,228 m above sea level) in the south, Mount Raduša (1,664 m) in the north, Mount Ljubuša (1,797 m) in the west, and Mount Vran (2,074 m) in the southeast. The lake is 7.5 km long and 4.6 km wide. It was created in 1968-1969 with the implementation of the Rama hydroelectric dam in the east, near the hamlet of Mluša. It takes water from the Rama River, which now has its source under the lake. It houses the remains of villages that were buried and whose 3,000 inhabitants had to be moved in 1968: Kopčići, Luka, Bruša and Škarina. The latter three now give their names to the islets to the west of the Matkovići peninsula, while to the east of the Šćit peninsula stands the lonely islet of Humac.
Half empty in summer. The lake is beautiful in spring, but not so beautiful in summer, when it is half empty. It is no longer fed by water from the melting snow of the neighboring mountains and the reserves are permanently pumped to operate the hydroelectric plant installed below the dam. But this is the period during which you can see the minaret of the old mosque of the village of Kopčići, buried the rest of the year.
