MONASTERY OF ŽITOMISLIĆ (MANASTIR ŽITOMISLIĆ)
Located in a beautiful green valley, this monastery is dedicated to the Annonunciation. It is one of the three major religious centers of the Serbian Orthodox Orthodox with Tvrdoš and Zavala. Many times destroyed, looted and damaged, it has been rebuilt every time, proof of the consistency of the Serbian presence in the region. It was founded in 1566 at the location of a former church of the fifteenth century by two wealthy Serbian families, the Miloradović and the Hrabren. He gained a great reputation through his seminar, library and wine production. The last two destruction was particularly brutal. In 1941, the Croatian Oustachis massacred the monks and destroyed all the buildings. In 1992, the monastery was dynamed by a self-contained paramilitary paramilitary unit. All the books that had been saved in 1941, including precious sixteenth and seventeenth centuries manuscripts were lost. The monastery was rebuilt in 2002-2005. It once again houses a community of monks.
