ĆEJVAN-ĆEHAJA MOSQUE
Mostar's former mosque, remodeled in neo-Moorish style in 1895, damaged in 1993 and restored in 1997.
This mosque (Ćejvan-Ćehajina Džamija) is today the oldest in Mostar. It was built in 1552-1553 thanks to a donation from Ćejvan-ćehaja (c. 1500-1570), a Bosnian nobleman who financed several buildings in the city, including the Ćejvan-Ćehajin hammam. The latter bore the honorary title of ćehaja (from Turkish kâhya, "servant") originally given to the deputy of an important person. Remodeled in the neo-Moorish style in 1895, damaged in 1993 and restored in 1997, it is the only mosque in Mostar with a minaret on the left side of the building.
