PLACE D'ESPAGNE
Place d'Espagne with an intersection named in honor of the Spanish peacekeepers who were deployed here from 1993.
Aesthetically, this Spanish square (Španski Trg/Španjolski Trg) cannot compete with its namesake in Rome. But it is the entrance to West Mostar and was at the heart of the fighting in 1993-1994. It is home to the Mostar High School, the ruined "Glass Bank" building, the Croatian National Theater, and it is from here that the Bulevar and Korzo rivers branch off. Originally, the square had no name, being just an intersection. It was named in 1995 in honor of the Spanish peacekeepers who were deployed here from 1993.
