POČITELJ FORTRESS
Ruined fortress on a rocky spur, one of the few monuments spared by the Croatian Defence Committee.
Located on a rocky spur, 100 m above sea level, this ruined fortress (Počiteljska Utvrda) dominates the entire historic village with its mighty 20 m high octagonal tower. The latter was erected during the reign of the Bosnian kings at the end of the 14th century and rebuilt after the capture of Počitelj by the Ottomans in 1471. The rest of the fortifications and other towers were added and remodeled until the 18th century. Abandoned in the following century, it is one of the few monuments that were spared by the Croatian Defense Committee in 1993.
