FORÊT PRIMAIRE DE PERUĆICA
Unesco-listed protected forest with trees over three hundred years old and a rich fauna.
This forest (Prašuma Perućica/Прашума Перућица) covers 1,434 ha. About 20,000 years old, it is one of the last forests in Europe that has never been influenced by human action. Protected since 1952 and included on the Unesco tentative list for world heritage status since 2017, it is completely preserved. Located on the border with Montenegro, under the Maglić and Volujak mountains, it is home to trees over 300 years old, beech trees exceeding 50 m in height and the 75 m high Skakavac waterfall. The fauna is very rich with lynx, wolves, bears and the presence of nine species of picadae, birds that depend on old or dead trees for feeding and nesting. Access to the forest is strictly controlled and the number of visitors is limited. So remember to book your trip well in advance at the national park information center.
Hiking: from Dragoš Sedlo to Suha. You can make an appointment directly with the national park guides in Tjentište or choose one of the offers provided by the Tara River rafting agencies. The hike is not difficult. However, it requires a good physical condition and suitable shoes. A small meal is provided, but take water and something to protect yourself from the rain.
