TRAIN TOURISTIQUE DU " HUIT DE ŠARGAN "
Tourist train on a narrow-gauge track, passing through thirty tunnels and the Šargan-Mokra Gora nature reserve.
Nicknamed the "Šargan Eight" (Šarganska Osmica/Шарганска Oсмица) because of its winding route through the mountains that evokes a figure eight from the sky, this 35-km stretch of railroad connects Višegrad to the village of Šargan Vitasi, Serbia. It is a portion of the old Sarajevo-Belgrade line built between 1903 and 1925. Closed in 1974, this narrow gauge track (760 mm) was first restored for the film Life is a miracle (2004) by Emir Kusturica, then opened to tourist trains in 2010 with diesel engines and a single steam locomotive called Nostalgija. Operated by the Serbian Railways, the "Šargan Eight" operates mostly in summer, between the villages of Mokra Gora and Šargan Vitasi, Serbia. The route is very beautiful, passing through thirty tunnels and through the Šargan-Mokra Gora nature reserve. The section to Višegrad is usually only accessible to groups, not individuals. However, check with the Višegrad tourist office to see if there are any places left. But you can also take it on a mini boat trip on the Drina from Lake Perućac: the Taratours agency organizes a return trip with the "Šargan Eight" from Višegrad (see Skelani). If you make this trip, the train usually stops at the monastery of Dobrun and the folk village of Drvengrad, created in 2004 by Emir Kusturica in Serbia, near the border.
