ABBEY OF SAINTE-MARIE-DE-L'ÉTOILE
Catholic monastery with a 57 m-long church, the world's largest Cistercian center with 219 monks.
This Catholic monastery (Opatija Marija Zvijezda/Самостан Марија Звијезда) was in 1910 the largest Cistercian center in the world with 219 monks. It now has only two, who make cheese. Founded in 1869 by the Austrian Franz Pfanner, the complex was given its abbey church in 1928. The 57-meter-long church houses a variety of works, including a 1944 portrait of Tito. This did not prevent socialist Yugoslavia from confiscating the land and the famous brewery of the abbey.
